Philosophy on Literacy

My Approach to Literacy Instruction

The concept of reading and writing, as literate adults, appears to be an easy and almost natural process. For young children learning the skills to become literate, the process is anything but easy and natural. In today’s society the pressure is on teachers to get students reading and writing earlier and earlier. Increasingly demanding state standards are sweeping the nation and it’s time to buckle down and produce fluent readers and writers at an early age. Which raises the ever so popular question, how? A number of factors go into teaching a child to read/write and an effective teacher will know all these factors and more. Teachers must have an understanding of how literacy skills are developed ( the various stages ), how to create a meaningful literate environment, effective teaching methods/strategies, and how to appropriately assess students. Teachers can tackle this and meet the state standards with suitable knowledge and skills. “The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go” (Dr. Seuss).
